Welcome to Wilken Woodworks

 

Based out of Taos, New Mexico, we serve Taos County and beyond with handcrafted woodwork. From custom renovation and restoration projects, to kitchenware and furniture, each piece is carefully crafted with attention to detail, using quality hardwoods.

 

Our Story

 

I'm glad you found our page! My name is Alexander Wilken, owner of Wilken Woodworks.

Woodworking has always been a passion of mine. When I was young I worked in a lumber yard, as well as built new construction homes and restored others with my late father in Kansas. After running a scene shop at my local college and assisting with instructing stagecraft classes, I attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.

I had the pleasure to work part-time as a shop foreman at the Tomari Technical Center while studying design and technical direction. Working under incredibly creative and talented instructors, I honed my skills and passion for woodworking as an artform. After graduation I worked as a Paleo Technician at Triebold Paleontology, manufacturing replicas of real fossils and safely shipping fragile projects.

I moved to Taos, New Mexico in 2018, where I had the privilege to find a job as a woodworker at Northern Lights Woodworks, owned and operated by master woodworker Marc Hempel. With a deep understanding of wood behavior and vast material knowledge, Marc taught me many lessons on craftsmanship and the ability to consistently produce high-quality and innovative works.

Afterward, I worked at Taos Mountain Builders, and assisted in the start-up and design of Taos Mountain Cabinets and Doors. In 2025 I officially established Wilken Woodworks LLC!

 

Our Craft

 

What started as a passion for woodworking has grown into a dedication to creating functional art. We specialize in handcrafted wooden items including doors, gates, furniture, kitchen and dinnerware, cabinets, organizers, and unique home décor pieces that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

We work with premium hardwoods, carefully selecting each piece of wood for its unique grain and character. Everything we produce is custom milled in our woodshop and finished with care. We strive to ensure each product is built to be both beautiful and functional.
